congrats to the newest couple, erika and darrin! i'm sure your wedding was beautiful...

it seems like everyone is getting married. which is not a bad thing. just an...unsettling thing. my cousin and two of my friends are all engaged, which is just crazy since they're my age. and while i AM happy for them all, it does pose the inevitable question...when will be my turn?

now don't get me wrong, i don't feel i'm at a place in my life where i can consider myself even the slightest bit adequately prepared for such a commitment, but it does make a girl wonder. and what girl HASN'T wondered about the proposal, the wedding, and the happily ever after? yet even the fantasy has some flaws.

my beef is with some traditions, and the extravagance of weddings.

the ring. the proposal. the guy gets all the fun. i suppose there's buttloads of stress, and the financial issue of being able to afford the ring and the couple-ness, but still. the girl has to wear the ring...what if he picks out something particularly heinous? or something not at all what she would like? isn't that a sign he doesn't really know her, or think of what she wants? that could be a problem

of course, the surprise is key. there are so many "unique" ways to propose, yet so many people try to outdo each other. like scavenger hunts and huge thought out expensive proposals...she's gonna suspect something. so long as she has more brains than a rock, she'll figure it out. ambush. you must AMBUSH her. not in a bad way, but keep it simple and sweet. the more complicated, the more chances for everything to get alllll fucked up, and no one wants that. and you'd need to keep in mind if she would want something private, or have everyone she does and doesn't know celebrate along with her.

plus, the whole, take her on a trip thing, or include a trip to get away once you're engaged...a nice, expensive thought, but its like a big bribe. no marriage, no ring, no trip. kinda makes a girl obligated to say yes...and who wants a obligated yes? no bribing the bride.

weddings cost a buttload of money. good lord, its enough to send everyone involved in debt. the bride's family should NOT have to foot the bill alone. that's poop. and of course the couple themselves shouldn't if they can't afford it. although it ought to be the happiest day in a couple's life, it is certainly not the last, and you all need some money for once the honeymoon is over.

so blah. marrital bliss is something i'm not ready for...but a girl can bittersweetly dream, right?
