criticism. constructive or not, people don't like it, which is just unfortunate for those who are trying to help and for the people they're trying to help. i've learned to bite my tongue when it comes to posting on message boards (go me) but it does make me sad to see things deteriorate the way they are.
i'm kind of glad i didn't see the halftime show for big game. this whole season has been...different. there's an entirely different tone/mood/feel to the organization and its supporters. i don't know if its good or if its bad, but its definitely not the same. for instance, where the hell are the positive people? the band does do a lot right. the music is more musical and the brass is kickin' ass. awesome. the band is also not perfect. so work on it. the excuses and the lame "let's see how much the OTHER bands suck" stuff doesn't make up for the fact that maybe the cal band needs some more work. it'll never be perfect. even the beloved shows of the past were not perfect (last year's bowl game a prime example). sometimes, you need get back to fundamentals and why they are really in this organization. if you joined b/c the team is winning and you want to go on road trips, so be it. but most of us joined b/c we love music, and we love to perform that music. and we love to do it well. even if that means gasping on the sidelines after a show, drenched in sweat. 110% and all that.
when joining the band, we were given 6 charges, 6 that are often forgotten, or never even really known by some members. and its hard, when you feel like its a personal attack on something you worked so hard at. i remember the random and stupid comments well...so ignore those. sometimes young band alums really do just want to help, they are the people who will always cheer for the band on the outside, even if they are going "WTF" on the inside. remember that they were in your shoes just a year or two ago, and the reason they speak up is because they can speak from experience, and give another point of view. don't just blow them all off, that's tasteless and ignorant. i've seen many a young band member give looks of "what do you know" or "why do you care?" to a senior who has JUST ended their last marching season for voicing an opinion...and good ones at that. FTA is one thing, FTYBA is quite another thing. in just a few years, everyone is done with the band (with the exception of people like the Law), and then you're a young band alum. and you get treated the same way you treated other alums. it won't feel good, and it won't help anyone. so swallow your damn pride and remember whats important. its not about you, and its not about them. its about this organization, an organization thats been around and that will continue to be around long after we're all gone. your 4 years in band are insignificant in the long span of things, but can play an important role in its span. the people you play to are past members, current fans, and the parents of future members. give them something to be proud of, an organization to be proud of.
